Conferences and events: research methods course in Bangladesh

Today’s guest post on conferences and events comes from our Bangladesh Coordinator Shaharima Parvin. She writes about her experience assisting with the delivery of a course on research methods, and about the kind of events she’d like to attend in the future:

Research refers to a search for knowledge; it is an original contribution to the existing stock of knowledge making for its advancement. It is the pursuit of truth with the help of study, observation, comparison and experiment. The East West University Library’s mission is to enable and enrich the teaching, learning and research endeavors of the University by delivering flexible access to relevant information resources and by providing quality services and facilities. We help our patrons’ collaboration in research and higher education.

SAARC Documentation Centre (SDC) New Delhi, India in collaboration with East West University (EWU) arranged the ten day course on research methods at East West University’s own campus in Aftabnagar, Dhaka. 25 participants from eight SAARC countries attended this program. This course was meant for researchers, faculty members, librarians, M. Phil and Ph.D students from 15-25 September.

The purpose of this course is to define research and describe the research process and research methods; to understand the processes and requirements for conducting successful research; to know how to apply the basic aspects of the research process in order to plan and execute a research project; to understand the process of sampling, the uses of questionnaires as data-gathering instruments, how a survey is carried out in terms of process and method; the uses of surveys and to be able to collect their own data; to use SPSS to conduct statistical analyses; to be able to present, review and publish scientific articles etc. They also expressed their hope about that course would help to increase consciousness about research methods and literature searching, which would increase efficiency in conducting quality research in SAARC region.

Main resource persons in this course were Dr. Rafiqul Huda Chaudhury, Chairperson, Centre for Research and Training (CRT), EWU, Dr. Jagtar Singh, President, Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS), and Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, Punjabi University, Patiala, India, Dr. Narendra Kumar, Chief Scientist, National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCAIR), New Delhi, India, and Dr. Syed Shahadat Hossain, Professor at University of Dhaka.

EWU Library team was the main organizer of this course and as a team member of this programme I have learnt so many things. Decorations create the environment for the event. The environment can convey culture, mood, or an attitude, and is instrumental in meeting goals and communicating the theme. I was the member of the decoration committee (Classroom for 10 days, Lab for 2 days). I have learnt how to develop a plan to move forward in an organized event and create an environment for success. Any way I work pretty much all over my Library in various positions where ever I feel I’m suitable. In this case, I was trying to execute my experiences from my position.

In a rapidly changing educational environment, academic libraries need more time and staff resources to meet the needs of their users. As personnel of academic library, I want to attend more events to acquire huge library related knowledge. There are so many events that I heard but especially I want to know about interlibrary loan internet accessible database (ILLiad). It is the electronic system you use to request an item through interlibrary loan. I want to gain huge knowledge about ILLiad. If there is any event about this topic, I would love to join any conference or event about this topic.

As well as, I want to join “Wikipedia and Libraries: Increasing Your Library’s Visibility” which has offered by OCLC. I want to learn how libraries can become more visible on the world’s largest free encyclopedia, and find out what steps your library can take to gain visibility on this important reference site. Hear examples of how libraries are engaging with Wikipedia, including hosting an editor, undertaking usage research and using OCLC’s knowledge base API and a Wikipedia script. This is free webinar and I would be really happy if I attend this programme physically.
